Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir: Main Image

Style

Although almost always lighter-bodied than most other red wines, there are different styles based on region, climate, and winemaking process.

France (Burgundy)

Burgundy is where pinot noir originated and is today practically the only red wine produced here. French Pinot noir is generally less fruity and less soft, with more earthy floral aromas and more structure. An excellent food wine.

California

Pinot noir from California reflects the warmer climate and bolder style preferred by many California wine drinkers. Typically much richer with ripe red fruit flavors, fuller body and more obvious oak notes.

Oregon

This style is somewhere between Burgundy and California. It tends to have bright pretty cherry fruit without the ripeness of California but without the earthiness of Burgundy. Medium-bodied, it is softer and fuller than Burgundy yet retains an elegance and balance not usually found in the heavier California style.
