Rejuvenator Redux
In nature’s vast wonderland, herbs from all over the world from various cultures are being appreciated for their traditional uses. So far, we have featured herbs from Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and North America. Some of these include Ashwagandha, Black Walnut, Devil’s Claw, Maca, Pau D’Arco, and Stone Root to name just a few. This week we’ll visit the Asian continent and highlight the popular rejuvenative tonic Fo-Ti Root.

Fo Ti Tieng Root, Cut, 16oz.What Is Fo Ti?
Fo-Ti, also known as Fo-Ti-Tieng, is from the plant Polygonum multiflorum, an evergreen native to Japan. It is known as Ho Shou Wu or He Shou Wu (Mandarin), Kashuu (Japanese) or Hasuo (Korean). Its first recorded use in traditional Chinese medical literature is said to have been as early as A.D. 713.

History of Use
In traditional Oriental medicine, Fo-Ti is believed to be one of the main rejuvenating tonics, right alongside Ginseng (some herbalists believe that the properties of Fo-Ti are quite similar to those of Ginseng).

Tonic: In traditional herbal medicine, a tonic is defined as an herb that gradually strengthens or tone specific body parts or organs. Chinese herbal guides list Fo-Ti as a blood, liver & kidney tonic. It is also said to be a tonic for the endocrine system, which includes the pancreas, adrenals and thymus glands. Fo-Ti has therefore been recommended to improve health, stamina, and improve resistance to disease.

Anti-aging: It is said to be especially popular with the elderly who believe it can help prevent premature aging, restore muscle tone, as well as help to maintain, even restore one’s natural hair color. Author Richard Lucas in his book The Secrets Of The Chinese Herbalists relates one interesting anecdote. He cited newspaper articles about a famous Chinese herbalist, who lived to be 256 years old. It was revealed that one of his secrets was using both Ginseng & Fo-Ti daily. A Hindu sage who lived to be over 100 years old is also said to have used the herb to prevent senility in his old age. Folklore notwithstanding, Fo-Ti continues to be used in anti-aging formulas, and is even included as the main ingredient in the well-known hair restoration formula, Shen Min.

What Else Is Fo Ti Used For?
As can be expected, an herb that has been in use for so long has an extensive list of benefits for a range of conditions. These conditions include : Anxiety, Arteriosclerosis, Colic, Constipation, Diabetes, Early Menopause, Enteritis, High Cholesterol, Hot Flashes, Hyperacidity, Hypertension, Hypoglycemia, Infertility, Insomnia, Swollen Lymph and Vertigo. Future applications are also possible, as researches are just beginning to investigate its use in treating male infertility.

Could this be the botanical “fountain of youth”? Read more about this fascinating herb in Today’s Herbal Health, How To Be Your Own Herbal Pharmacist and Earl Mindell’s Herb Bible, The Little Herb Encyclopedia..
